Character Name: Junko Enoshima
Canon: Dangan Ronpa
Canon Point: Post-death, chapter 6: after she meets with her Detention.
Background/History: the live play, tv tropes. There's no specific page on Junko's involvement in Dangan Ronpa, and it's a bit ridiculous to ask to read the LP, so I'll be providing a summary! While Junko plays a very big role in all the installments of Dangan Ronpa, her primary and most notorious one is in the original game itself.
Living her life in Despair, Junko Enoshima and Mukuro Ikusaba were close as any pair of sisters could be, and it showed through the way they rightfully stood by each other and dealt with each other as time went on. Instead of falling into the despair, they embraced it, and soon Junko's mind became rather clouded and twisted with different ideas from the normal girl putting on her makeup. Realizing the cruelty and reality of the world at a young age, there's no doubt in her mind that there's just something about it that tickles her fancy. They conspired, and eventually formed Super High School Level Despair. Which is an organization that's often feared for much more than its name, it's clear what their motives are, and it's Despair.
While the details aren't exactly stated, it's the people in SHSL Despair that make with the Worst, Most Despair-Inducing Incident in the History of Mankind possible, ultimately being the Despairification of Mankind-- a plan concocted by the Despair Sisters. This incident is what drives the students and specifically, Junko's classmates, into hiding at Hope's Peak Academy until it all blew over and everything settled. They sealed themselves inside, agreeing to remain as humanity's last hope for as long as they live and to never leave. These fifteen students were unlucky enough to be locked in with Junko and her sister, more than likely because they were the ones being subjected to the game of murder. The instigator behind everything, disguised as "Monobear", Junko rallied the students to kill one another with crucial and distinct motives with the promise of leaving.
But there was more than just that, as with each murderer has to bear, they proceed with a trial to determine who the killer is once a body is discovered. Once the murderer is found, they are executed in front of their friends with a method customized only for them.
Though, if they were all friends how could they so easily switch on each other? The answer is simple, as Junko had given them some form of memory loss in order to forget their friendships they made before it all, making them complete and utter strangers. And because they were all now "strangers", it was easy for Mukuro to disguise as her sister and become "Super High School Level Fashion Girl". Not long had passed before "Junko Enoshima" had assaulted Monobear after the first murder. Because of that, she had been pierced with several spears, killing her as an example for the rest of the students. From then on, Junko manipulated and coaxed the rest of the students to further participate in this game, murdering their companions and suffering the worst kind of despair through the lies and mistrust they placed upon themselves. She had to push them, first to recruit those who believed in the cause, and second to draw in those who opposed her to gun them down at the gates of the school.
Eventually, the murdering ceases, and the ever watchful eye of Enoshima doesn't like the pause in what they're doing. She eventually takes matters into her own hands, putting some sense into those bastards by crushing their little laptop to merciless bits. Since it's hard to keep secrets in a place ridden with security cameras! At some point she took it upon herself to personally knock Naegi utterly unconscious as he was snooping in the bathroom, disguised perfectly, and even assaulting him when he was bedridden. It was his luck that saved him, and because of that luck the desecration of Mukuro's body came into play. From what seems to be no real respect for the dead, Junko, for the final case of the Mastermind and the murderer of Junko Enoshima (later to be agreed upon as Mukuro Ikusaba), used her sister's body as the key ingredient for everything. It was a minefield, and it brought the real Junko out of hiding when she was caught in the middle of the trial following the discovery of the corpse.
During the trial she acknowledged defeat but found no comfort in leaving the secrets they couldn't figure out unsolved, and guided them along the way before she provided an ultimatum: Execute Naegi, or risk the air purification to shut off and be forced to leave by picking Junko? With their hope renewed by Naegi's proclamations, they all mutually agreed upon Junko's death and she merrily dove into her own execution, ending the game of murder with her suicide.
Personality:
Despite her occupation, when you meet the Junko Enoshima that isn't on a magazine, there's something... off about her.
There's something that doesn't make you want to smile, but actually might unnerve you. There's something overwhelmingly alarming about her, and it's hard to put a finger on it. And that's probably because everything about Junko Enoshima is a cause for worry.
Bored as frequently as she breathes, Junko Enoshima's entire existence revolves around two things: despair and entertainment. Throughout the entirety of both games and the novel within the series, Junko frequently reminds others of just how quickly she tires of things. How she hates waiting, how she's so annoyed about people who don't get it. Impatient, she's the type of girl who can't wait three minutes for her noodles to heat up. The type of girl who can't stand standing in one place.. who can't stand having the same personality otherwise she just might die. If there's a plan to follow, she's guaranteed to deviate from it— she might even have the idea to deviate mid-conception of the initial plan to begin with. Her boredom, however, just doesn't affect how she deals with situations, but also her mentality and personality.
The Junko Enoshima she presents herself as is entirely different from the girl who she really is, when you factor out all her other "personalities". Yet, despite the differences in how she presents herself, every emotion she puts forth is genuine, no matter how many time she switches between them! She finds talking to people an annoying chore she has to do, but of course never mentions it to anyone but herself. She aims to find use out of people— not companionship, because what Junko Enoshima wants is more important (even more than friendship). Mid-conversation, there's a good chance she'll simply leave because she's gotten bored of talking, or just finds that person too boring to talk to. And what's the best way to cure boredom? Despair. Conflict. Riddles, puzzles. Entertainment.
In order to help entertain herself, to prevent that feeling of boredom she always feels, she became the very definition of "grandeur". Just from a glance, you can tell everything about her is outrageous, but that doesn't change the fact that there's no gleam in her eye (and that they look rather dark despite their color). Her actions, words, and expressions are so over the top you can cover your eyes and still hear her expression. Her laughter is stinted, her giggles are so sweet it can give you cavities, and her cackles just might ruffle you. Despite how peppy she makes herself out to be, she doesn't exactly filter out her words, either. She makes it painfully clear just how she feels on something, sparing no one from her harsh criticism. She makes it a point to speak her mind, and finds no use in holding her words back just because someone might get offended. You can even say that half of the crap she does, she does just to get a reaction from others.
Which is true, primarily because her actions are never without purpose, no matter how stupid they may be at the time. In some cases, it's to sate herself, and in others, it's for the better good of herself. There's a terrifying intellect that she has, one that should belong to a tactician rather than a schoolgirl, and she utilizes it to create disastrous situations for both herself and the world. Time and time again, we see impossible feats of this genius put into action— Mukuro memorizing an entire script written by Junko as Junko so she could converse with Yasuke and "Ryouko" with no problems whatsoever (as if she were the real thing), Junko seamlessly adapting an entirely new persona right on the spot in order to evade suspicion in Dangan Ronpa IF when her plans go awry, Junko concocting a plan that spanned over two years to throw the world into despair just because she could. Give her time with someone, and she can accurately predict what they will say and what they're thinking with little to no effort at all. She analyzes others, and makes sure to use whatever she knows about them against them in order to give herself the upper hand.
And despite all of that, she's never really satisfied with what she produces because she knows it'll work. Throughout the entirety of the series we see that no matter what she plans, it always stays true to its course much to Junko's dismay. Even with her meticulous and calculating nature, no amount of satisfaction from winning will ever replace the feeling of boredom and brief disappointment she experiences when it doesn't fall through. Winning or losing, she'll win either way considering her aptitude to turn bad into good. If she wins, she won't be impressed, but hey she still won so let's celebrate anyway. If she loses, she won't be impressed either, but hey she lost so let's celebrate anyway. What matters most is what her actions brought forth, despair or hope. Which is why she strives so much to make everything she does foolproof.
It is, quite frankly, not that uncommon for Junko to manipulate others for her own reasons. She likes the power and knowledge that conquers others, just for her own amusement, and thrives on it for multiple reasons. She pushes at buttons, exploits fears and faults and insecurities just because she can, all the while speaking with a smile. She has no real regard for how other's feel unless it's for her own benefit, which is why she's so callous towards acquaintances and close friends. Her sister, Mukuro, often being a victim of Junko's verbal abuse ("pathetic", "retarded", "disappointing") both out of annoyance and some semblance of love despite how she treats her. Which is, poorly, to say the least. Mukuro, despite being Junko's sister, has been exposed to Junko's horrible nature firsthand and has suffered because of it. Even if she's the little sister, Junko is the one always in charge and ordering Mukuro around as she pleases, and is often more concerned with what to do with her than her well being. She manipulates family members and close friends like it isn't her problem, because as far as she's concerned, everyone's free game. And they belong to her, anyway, so what's the problem?
Of course, the problem is is that Junko genuinely believes that everyone belongs to her. That the world is her playground, and that everyone is living on spent time. That everyone exists to be used by Junko Enoshima. She believes it so strongly that she lives in this world with little to no problem at all because she made it happen. With Super High School Level Despair, that prophecy is true— she is revered and worshiped, treated like a God among mortals, with everyone waiting to be used. Junko is charismatic, pulling people in without having to do any work at all, and that's exactly how she pulled those poor students in. She can corrupt someone so badly that she can kill your family and you'll thank her. But that doesn't mean she gives those kids any special treatment, in fact, she thinks them to be bugs. She lacks any real sense of remorse for anything she does and that includes considering those kids to be expendable. Everyone serves as a way for Junko Enoshima to experience despair, to live in it and bathe breathe drink eat sleep dance swim— everything that can be named.
Her thoughts always, always, always revolve around despair, her own despair, and the despair of others. She loves the sensation and the heart wrenching feeling so much that she made herself into a Queen, she gunned down kids who thought hope to be better than despair just because, she trapped all of her friends in a game of mutual killing and supervised it. There's no real reason why she likes it, she just does. She was born that was and despair defines her— it makes her who she is, Junko Enoshima. So she embraces it, she builds up hope just to destroy it with her despair. She theorizes about it, she cultivates it lovingly, and it's the only real thing an impatient girl like her will wait for. And because she was born 'in despair', she has no limits, allowing her to accomplish impossible feats no real human could because she can simple put her all into it.
It doesn't help that she has a horrendously horrific despair fetish that fuels her, either.. When she killed her most 'precious person', Yasuke Matsuda, she practically died in the confusing yet captivating sensation of despair. When her sister died in despair, Junko was only really concerned with her jealousy in not being able to experience that feeling. Whilst having the both of them killed, both by her own actions, she's aware of it. She's aware that everything she does is bad and not good, and that her personality switching mumbo jumbo isn't normal either, showing that she's still rational despite how absurd and crazy she may seem. And, despite all the aforementioned traits (and killing some pretty close relationships), it wouldn't be the first time she killed others. She's rather unsympathetic, with no real qualms on killing, finding more of a reason to punish herself for getting urine (from body she killed) on her skirt than the actual fact she killed someone by putting a urine soaked notebook between her breasts. She finds more reason to be concerned when she's bored, if anything. Hell, she hardly even felt pity or remorse for switching out Sakura's suicide letter, only wanting to lead the trial astray for her own benefit.
Even with her genius level intellect, she's pretty crude and perverted, often referencing her boobs and very not safe for work things just for her own amusement. She still reads manga, she makes awful references and puns whenever she feels like, she even has a morbid sense of humor that you just might kill for.. And you'd think someone more menacing and outlandish wouldn't do something like that. You'd think that someone so despair-inducing wouldn't get shocked or caught off guard just because of someone's reaction, either. But on the contrary, she's actually very reminiscent of your average fashion-crazed teenager. She talks a lot, and spares no one from her tangents. She's forceful and has no sense of personal space, invading other's privacy like it were her own. She isn't one to back down either, often known to be incredibly stubborn and forward with her advances and actions. In fact, she's even guaranteed to switch around her language if she bothers, because her boredom doesn't escape this personality— "the original"— as far as she's concerned. However, the same can't be said for her other seven.
Junko, being bored of everything all the time, can get bored of her own personality. To solve that problem, she created seven more personalities to combat her constant boredom, all based on character archetypes.
* THE ALOOF TYPE
The first of the seven faces Junko Enoshima has is of a cool and collected girl, who doesn't hold any fear or.. well, remorse for anything she might say. Behind the palm that conceals her face, she has a rather devious smile in place. Her voice definitely reflects the body language she's giving off, as she sounds as calm and experienced as she looks. The way she speaks is with maturity, misleading others into think she's more wise she looks.
* THE BURIKKO TYPE
The second act is of the typical burikko. Which is, by definition, a woman who feigns cute, childish behavior for the sake of attention. And Junko's version of this archetype is very similar, down to the very few words that define it. Junko's hair ridiculously smooths out, and her movements scream the very opposite of masculinity. Her eyes quite literally sparkle, and are more widened than they usually are. When she speaks, instead of the matured voice she normally has, it's almost like that of a kid, nasally and high pitched for the extra amount of cute.
* THE QUEEN TYPE
The third is of a woman who is the best, the greatest, and the almighty singular ruler of our time— a Queen! Just as the word dictates, Junko acts upon her natural sense of superiority and dons a literal crown and strikes her hands on her hips. With chest outward and posture more than proper, she acts like she can conquer the world with just her beautiful finger, and that people should respect her (as filthy peasants should, it's only natural).
* THE MEGANE TYPE
The fourth is of a proper, business like and just about (even more perfect) woman who sports a pair of glasses she seems to pull out of no where on the bridge of her nose. Along with a very tight and perfectly aligned posture, Junko can be seen normally adjusting those glasses with a clipboard resting against her side— pen included. While her pigtails may be gone, they are replaced with a sole ponytail, a finely combed one at that. She normally speaks with articulacy and a speed that only a machine could match, and aims to shows her mass vocabulary any chance she has.
* THE YANKEE TYPE
The fifth is of a yankee girl!!! Who's blunt with what she says and doesn't sugarcoat anything for anyone!! Her hair is completely brutish, brazen, and rugged, extending in all kinds of directions in a wild kind of way. Her brows are, if always, furrowed and the way she sticks out her tongue as she speaks definitely shows her lack of any real respect for any authority— or anyone. She speaks with an extremely thick yankee accent to accompany her disreputable appearance.
* THE GLOOMY TYPE
The sixth is of a girl who's always glum, low and might as well be a mix of passive and despair . Her usually perk pigtails are now drooped, mushrooms growing atop her head and her expression downcast, blue tinted, and in tears as she holds her golden strands in a completely different stance than her usual confident self. She talks with deliberate pauses between her words to emphasize her depression, trailing off in utter defeat and self pity, questioning things as if expressing, "Why me?"
* THE MONOBEAR TYPE
The final, and let's not forget the best, face of them all is the one that helped guide the students through their time at Hope's Peak Academy. Monobear, which is a bear that is both black and white, split down the very middle, with half a monstrous grin donned on his face. Whenever she's in this personality, she holds up a little replica of Monobear in front of her face, and speaks in the same manner he does— save for the fact the voice sounds more feminine than Monobear's usual one.
Despite how superficial and fake she is overall, it's an understatement to say that she still can't experience emotions just like any person. Even though she may focus all of her efforts on bringing and spreading despair upon herself and others, it'd be pointless if she were nothing but apathetic. Her extravagant habits translate directly to her emotions, pushing her emotions to the extreme. When she's sad, she cries a literal river, and can become so frustrated that she'll scream and whine and moan and protest til the mountains crumble. When yelling just isn't enough, she has to vent, she has to kick, she has to release a pitiable laugh that crumbles into sobs upon realizing something dreadful. In some way, she's an open book, letting others see into her heart through the very emotion that she lives to achieve: despair. Primarily because she isn't ashamed to show others her worst part of herself, and holds no shame whatsoever in any form.
She observes, making a point to memorize what someone's feeling at that time, and her own more importantly. Yet, she's more secretive than she is open, withholding important information pertaining to herself and others. Not once does she mention Mukuro being her sister in DR0 or Dangan Ronpa until the very end, not once does she reveal her relationship with Yasuke throughout DR0, either. We only know what she wants us to know, and ideally, that's nothing. But what she doesn't show is a personal side-- the side that's utterly consumed and obsessed with the idea of Yasuke and her devotion to him, the side that's irked by social interaction and her sister.
Yasuke Matsuda, a childhood friend of Junko's, is her self-proclaimed 'boyfriend', someone that she's become despair-inducingly obsessed with to the point where all she wants is just to always be near him and to love him, to cuddle and everything inbetween. He's someone who has gone to hell and back for her, watched her change from a human to something less, and complied with her plans. He is her most "important person", yet she purposely irritates him. She purposely argues with him, hardly ever coming to an agreement with the boy, and purposely makes his life more difficult by forgetting about him.
He is her most "important person", yet she used him for his work and let him die in despair despite having the option of letting him pass a little more peacefully. In the end, despite loving him, she pushed past those feelings to throw herself into despair as she witnessed his passing, reveling in the sensation only to become angered when she couldn't get anymore. She killed her own sister-- one, because she couldn't act at all, and two, because she got bored-- not only as an example, but to drown in the despair of losing her sister.
It's that kind of self-destructive behavior that makes anyone in harms way once they associate with Junko. It's that kind of self-destructive behavior that pushed her to commit suicide just to experience the despair of death-- despair, despair, despair, despair despair despair despair. She'll die for it and kill for it. She'll hope for it, and despair because of it.
Abilities/Powers:
One thing we can really note about Junko is that she's the brains out of the Despair Sisters. While Mukuro is the brawn's, Junko is the genius who works out the finer details of what's proposed to her. Hijacking the television signals to broadcast the inner workings of the school, creating an intricate crime that seemed a bit too good to be true, let's not forget the executions she more than likely had to deal with before putting them to use, since she was known for her awfully ironic ways of giving these criminals their punishment. It's safe to assume that no matter the situation her intellect shines through every matter, and she uses it to her advantage every moment she can.
Including that, Enoshima holds the title of Super High School Level Fashion Girl, being incredibly known throughout the world for her modelling on top magazines and creating a sensation across the nation with her new, outlandish looks. After the death of her sister, she is also Super High School Level Despair. Now being the only holder of the title, it proves her miraculous dedication to the word and how determined she is to spread it. Adding onto that, she seems to be incredibly formidable, considering the fact that as Despair and having lived nothing but a Despair filled life, Junko sees herself as a Superwoman who can do literally anything. Mostly because the "shackles" preventing her had been freed, thus allowing her to always go at her max!!
As an example, because of this, Enoshima went through over five executions of gruesome and ridiculous proportions, and managed perfectly fine until she got sent to "Detention". It is also known that as Super High School Level Despair that when others are around her for too long, they can be drawn into her despair and even be driven to suicide if exposed to her for prolonged amounts of time.
Items/Weapons: Junko will be arriving with her plush (life sized) Monobear, her pair of glasses, and crown, respectively.
Sample Entry: Here's a link to a post over at another game!
Sample Entry Two:
Junko Enoshima is a girl who holds many secrets. Always keeping herself guarded, she doesn't hide behind "faces". It's presumptuous to think that those are shields.. too predictable, too boring, too cliche, too normal. But there was nothing normal, nothing boring, nothing cliche, about the feeling that is "despair". With her head landing on her palm, she concludes it's the despair of the typical ("Normalcy," she sighs with distaste) that strikes her.
.. So, why is this loser trying to pick her up?
She initially arrived here with bigger plans in mind, but even this modest model got the lower end of the deal when she fell prey to a carnivorous man. Light stubble, worn out shirt (how did he even get in? Ugh!), smells strongly of alcohol-- she's offended, and it shows by the way her face slowly scrunches in distaste. When she doesn't want to be bothered, it's obvious, but even after sending hints it still doesn't dawn on the male. She turns to face him, curling her thick and styled hair with her finger, tilting her head slightly to accentuate her features. She felt bile, maybe she was exaggerating, lightly in her mouth as the other took the bait easily. There simply wasn't a challenge here! "You think I'm playing hard to get? As embarrassing as that sounds, I don't stick with cliches.. it's more expressive to come up with your own routes, don't you think?" it isn't hard to even coax his number (probably his mom's) on a napkin.
Having been playing the bartender for the evening at the bar, Junko takes out various brands of alcohol before she settles on two. A large glass, peppermint, and a lighter are present. He's gleefully thinking she's going to put on a show for him-- and in a matter of precise seconds, she's nearly finished with the beverage and coats the top with rum. Oh? There's his number? She smiles sweetly as she drops it in the drink and lets the other soak in the sight of the paper being discarded. "Y'know, I'm super duper picky with my guys, but that's fuckin' implying that they get through the outer layer." the lighter flickers and immediately burns, setting the very top of the drink aflame along with the digits. "I see someone who wants it, though, he looks like a total match." she whispers as she slides the drink to the burly biker who catches it with his hands as he blows out the flames.
His face contorts from happiness to confusion and eventually embarrassment, burning with despair as her words pierce his ears. She laughs, deliberately, possibly louder when the biker who took the drink spit it out and rushed to the bathroom.
"Look, even your number is making his stomach upset, too!"
Lies, lies.. That's simply with the help of laxatives, but it's not like he even saw her sneak them in anyway. With the despair now established, introductions can be made (even if she undoubtedly broke his heart and crushed his self esteem).
"I'm Junko Enoshima, just a model in a professional world! I'm the boss of other things too, but it's T-O-P S-E-C-R-E-T!"

* THE ALOOF TYPE
* THE BURIKKO TYPE
* THE QUEEN TYPE
* THE MEGANE TYPE
* THE YANKEE TYPE
* THE GLOOMY TYPE
* THE MONOBEAR TYPE
